If you have a puppy or kitten, parasite control should be a part of their routine wellness care and is typically addressed when you bring them in for their first checkup. In fact, we have a “free first dose” sample program. For most puppies and kittens, this means they will get started around 8 weeks of age. We will help decide which preventatives are best for your pet, depending on their age, weight, and lifestyle. Check with your veterinarian in Fairfax, CA to find out more details regarding your specific pet.

What medication do I need?

The answer to this depends on the activities and routines of your pets. Do they stay indoors or go outside? Do you like to hike with them? Off leash? Do they go to dog parks? Do you have a cat door for your cat to come and go as they please? Do you live in town or near open space? Does your pet have any other medical conditions? Do they swim often? Is it easy or difficult to give them a pill?

Dr. Aaron Wentzell, Dr. Mary Beth Goetting, Dr. Ryen Morey, R. Kelly Pipkin, and Dr. Katie Kristensen are here to help you decide what is best for your pet. Based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and based on your preferences, we will help you pick the best combination flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Of course, our primary concern is that we choose something that is safe for your pet, safe for you and your family, and that works!

This will vary depending on what type of flea, tick and heartworm meds you select. There are topical options, as well as oral options. And for dogs, there is a tick collar that can work well. These items can be purchased in singles, or for a better deal, you may purchase a 6 or even 12 month supply.

Available products include Heartgard, Simparica, Revolution, Preventic collars, Revolution, Comfortis, and Trifexis. Parasite prevention should be one of many components of a wellness plan for your pet. Parasite prevention is really easier than pursuing a cure after the fact. And many of the parasites mentioned carry infectious disease and have the potential for other complications.
